The Challenge
A global leader in building technologies and solutions experienced a sudden outage affecting access to critical CIFS shares on their enterprise NetApp storage array. The issue emerged shortly after a routine domain controller update and impacted hundreds of users across the organization. Despite successful Kerberos authentication, users were unable to authenticate via LDAP, preventing access to essential file shares and halting productivity.
The Root Cause
Maven IT Solutions quickly identified the root cause: a domain controller compatibility issue triggered by Microsoft’s CVE-2022-38023, which introduced stricter authentication policies. While Kerberos continued functioning, LDAP authentication failed due to security restrictions tied to this update — an issue not yet widely understood within many enterprise environments.
The Solution
Within a short timeframe, Maven’s engineering team implemented a creative, multi-pronged workaround using NetApp’s multiprotocol capabilities:
- Reconfigured the NetApp SVM to enable NFS access
- Created a dedicated Logical Interface (LIF) for NFS traffic
- Configured NFS exports for both a Windows and Linux host
- Mounted volumes and provided detailed Linux host guidance
- Supported access troubleshooting related to NTFS-based ACLs
- Delivered permission advisory for mixed-protocol environments
This allowed the client to regain immediate access to critical data while continuing to troubleshoot long-term compatibility with the updated domain controller.
The Outcome
Despite the complexity of the issue, Maven IT Solutions restored data availability in record time — without requiring hardware changes or data migration. Users were back online quickly, minimizing business disruption. The client was especially appreciative of the hands-on guidance provided throughout the NFS configuration and access process.
“Your team diagnosed a nuanced, domain-level issue faster than our OEM support ever could — and had us back online with minimal downtime. That kind of flexibility and depth is why we rely on you.”
