Dell PowerFlex, formerly EMC ScaleIO and VxFlex OS, represents Dell’s software-defined storage platform: a scale-out block storage layer that runs on commodity x86 servers and delivers enterprise-grade performance, resilience, and flexibility. The architecture is elegant: a distributed mesh-mirror data protection scheme across standard PowerEdge servers, managed by a Metadata Manager (MDM) cluster, with Storage Data Servers (SDS) providing capacity and Storage Data Clients (SDC) consuming it. It scales from a handful of nodes to hundreds, supports hyperconverged and two-layer architectures, and runs on VMware, KVM, Hyper-V, or bare metal. But “software-defined” doesn’t mean “hardware-irrelevant.” Your PowerFlex environment runs on PowerEdge servers with SSDs, NVMe drives, network cards, and power supplies that fail, and when a storage node goes down in a distributed mesh, the cluster must rebalance and rebuild data across remaining nodes. Older ScaleIO Ready Nodes have reached end of service life, and VxFlex nodes are approaching end of service life. Three Brands, One Platform: Navigating ScaleIO, VxFlex, and PowerFlex Support
If you’re confused by the branding, you’re not alone. Dell has renamed this platform twice:
ScaleIO (2013–2018)
The original EMC software-defined block storage, acquired by EMC in 2013. Deployed on ScaleIO Ready Nodes, purpose-built Dell PowerEdge servers pre-configured for ScaleIO. These nodes have all reached or are approaching EOSL.
VxFlex OS / VxFlex Ready Nodes (2018–2020)
The intermediate branding after Dell acquired EMC. Same software, same architecture, rebranded hardware nodes based on R640, R740xd, and R840 PowerEdge servers. VxFlex Manager replaced the original ScaleIO management tools.
PowerFlex (2020–present)
The current branding. Same core architecture as VxFlex, expanded to appliance, rack, and custom node deployment models. Maven supports ScaleIO and VxFlex nodes that have reached or are approaching EOSL under this platform’s management umbrella.
The challenge for customers: Dell’s support posture varies across these generations. ScaleIO Ready Nodes are past EOSL with no Dell support available. VxFlex nodes are approaching or past EOSL. PowerFlex appliances carry active ProSupport with annual price escalation. And many production environments mix generations, older ScaleIO or VxFlex nodes alongside newer PowerFlex appliances in the same cluster. Maven covers all of them under a single contract.
Why Maven: We Understand What Happens When a Storage Node Leaves the Mesh
PowerFlex’s distributed mesh-mirror architecture is self-healing by design, when a storage node (SDS) fails, the cluster automatically rebalances data across remaining nodes to restore protection. But this process consumes bandwidth, I/O capacity, and time. If a second node fails before the rebuild completes, data availability is at risk. The hardware under your software-defined layer matters enormously, and it needs expert support from engineers who understand both the PowerEdge platform and the PowerFlex software dynamics.

One of the most common PowerFlex deployment patterns (and one of the biggest support headaches) is a mixed-generation cluster. Organizations that have expanded their software-defined storage over the years often have original ScaleIO Ready Nodes (R620/R630/R720xd/R730xd) running in the same protection domain as newer-generation nodes. The software layer treats them all as storage nodes, but Dell’s support posture is fragmented:
- ScaleIO Ready Nodes: Past EOSL, no Dell support at any price
- VxFlex Ready Nodes (R640/R740xd): Approaching or past EOSL, limited Dell support availability

What’s the difference between ScaleIO, VxFlex, and PowerFlex?
They’re the same core technology under three successive brand names. ScaleIO was the original EMC software-defined block storage. It was rebranded to VxFlex OS (with VxFlex Ready Nodes) after the Dell-EMC merger. It became PowerFlex in 2020 with expanded deployment options (appliance, rack, custom nodes). The software architecture (MDM cluster, SDS, SDC, mesh-mirror protection) is consistent across all three brands. Maven supports hardware from all three generations.
My ScaleIO Ready Nodes are past EOSL. Can Maven still support them?
Yes. All original ScaleIO Ready Nodes (R620/R630/R720xd/R730xd-based) are past Dell’s EOSL, but Maven maintains parts inventory and engineering expertise for these servers. We provide the same SLA-backed coverage that Dell used to offer.
We have a mixed cluster with old ScaleIO nodes and new PowerFlex appliances. Can Maven cover all of them?
Yes, and this is one of Maven’s biggest advantages for PowerFlex environments. A single Maven contract covers every node in your cluster regardless of generation, eliminating the fragmented support posture where some nodes have Dell ProSupport, some are past EOSL, and some fall in between.
Does Maven support PowerFlex software or just the hardware?
Both. Maven’s support covers the PowerEdge hardware (break/fix, parts, on-site service) and the PowerFlex software layer (MDM cluster management, SDS/SDC troubleshooting, rebalancing, protection domain configuration, replication, and PowerFlex Manager operations).
PowerFlex is “software-defined.” Why do I need hardware support?
Because software-defined storage still runs on physical hardware. SSDs fail, NICs fail, power supplies fail, DIMMs fail. When a storage node’s hardware fails, the PowerFlex mesh has to rebuild data across remaining nodes, a process that consumes bandwidth and I/O capacity. Fast, expert hardware replacement minimizes the window of reduced protection and performance impact.
Does Maven support PowerFlex Rack or just appliances?
Maven supports all PowerFlex deployment models: appliance, rack (including PFMC management infrastructure), and custom nodes. We also support the network switching infrastructure within rack deployments.
